A fall chill signaled the end of summer’s day and a near capacity crowd filled the Vets Memorial. JIM MCAFFREY lead us in song with “America the Beautiful” and TAWNY TESCONI (as a last minute substitution) gave us a wonderful thought for the day.

RICK MOSSI introduced the visiting Rotarians and CONNIE HEIZER worked the microphone around the room for Rotarians with guests. PRESIDENT ONITA PELLEGRINI asked for a Sunshine Report and TAWNY TESCONI said HEIDI KIBBE’S mother is not doing well - our thoughts and prayers are with you, Heidi.

PRESIDENT ONITA passed around a giant “Thank you” card from the Petaluma Boys and Girls Club in appreciation for our Club’s support.

JEANETTE CLARK stepped up to the podium

and introduced our newest member, ROBERT MITCHELL, who was accompanied by his wife and Club sponsor, JIM BECKER. Welcome Robert and thank you to Jim and Jeanette for your support.

PETALUMA SUNRISE CLUB Past President BARBARA SCHROEDER announced the inaugural New Year’s Eve Party. This event is done in conjunction with all Petaluma Rotary Clubs and is sure to be a success.

TAWNY TESCONI asked for support with the McKinley School tutoring program. Mike Baddeley gave a re-cap on the Friendship Feasts.

Mike Madick announced the upcoming party for the International Foundation

and DAVE BARBIERI invited us to participate in the lunch honoring all Veterans to be held in Santa Rosa. Please check with these members for specific information - your editor was too busy eating to write notes.

PRESIDENT ONITA called on STEVE RUSTAD to give his Craft Talk. WOW! Steve did a very humorous and informative power point presentation on his life and experiences, up to this point. He clearly put forth a tremendous effort and has raised the bar for all future Craft Talks. Great job, Steve.

BILL GROVERMAN won the Raffle and walked away with a bottle of wine. PRESIDENT ONITA announced there would be no fines levied today and the sighs of relief could be heard throughout the room.

KIP HERZOG introduced our guest speaker, Chief of the Petaluma Police Department, Thomas Simms. Chief Simms asked us to take a moment of silence in honor of fallen Novato firefighter Steve Rucker, who perished in the San Diego fires. Chief Simms then gave the crowd a detailed summary of the Police Department and its operation. He also spoke about the Petaluma intruder and what the Department is doing to capture this criminal and alleviate the fears of our community. We are fortunate to have Tom Simms as our Chief of Police. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the post and he knows what it takes to run an effective Police Department. Thank you, Chief Simms, for your informative presentation.

Happy Halloween.

COMING EVENTS

October 30 - Petaluma Police Chief Tom Simms: Gangs & Drugs in Petaluma
November 6 - John Burns, Argus-Courier Editor
November 13 - Jennifer Weiss, Executive Director, Petaluma Boys & Girls Club

Hope everyone remembered we were Dark this week for the Friendship Feast.

I’d like to remind everyone of the upcoming Foundation Dinner at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. The Western Hoe Down begins at 5:00p.m. There’ll be square dancing demonstrations, beer and wine tasting, a western style barbecue and a silent auction.

Remember to get your raffle tickets from MIKE MADDICK. They are $10 each for credit going towards a Paul Harris Fellowship. What is The Rotary Foundation and a Paul Harris Fellowship? For all the new members and a quick refresher for the old timers, here are some facts.

An endowment fund, set up by Rotarians in 1917 “for doing good in the world,” became the Rotary Foundation. Upon the death of Paul Harris in 1947, an outpouring of Rotarian donations made in his honor, totaling $2 million, launched the foundations - Ambassadorial Scholarships. Today, contributions to the Rotary Foundation total more than $80 million annually and support a wide range of humanitarian grants and educational programs that enable Rotarians to bring hope and promote international understanding throughout the world.

Paul Harris Fellowship recognition was created in memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, as a way to show appreciation for contributions to the Foundations charitable and educational program. A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes $1,000 or in whose name that amount is contributed. Every Paul Harris Fellow receives a pin, a medallion and a certificate when he or she becomes a fellow. This identifies the Paul Harris Fellow as an advocate of the Foundation’s goals of world peace and international understanding.

ICK “Red Zone” SUSICK was then clipped for $100.00 for rolling up big vacation yardage through Tahiti, Oregon, Arizona and Tahoe. PAUL “Point After” RAMATICI and STEVE “Hidden Ball” HENRIS then sheepishly admitted to jointly purchasing an expensive new ski boat on an impulsive, cocktail induced game plan, but couldn’t bring themselves to reveal the boat’s name - the Prez flagged them for illegal procedure, and moved them back $50.00 each!

Paying fines today were (clockwise from top left) Rick Susick,
Paul Ramatici, Steve Henris, Loretta Catarozoli, Gina Pittler, and Clark Rosen.

The Prez then sacked CLARK “End Around” ROSEN $50.00 for going to New Zealand and Australia to find out once and for all which way the water drains in the Southern Hemisphere. GINA “P.A.T” PITTLER was then drilled for $25.00 for successfully weaving her development project through the vaunted City of Petaluma SPARC defense. The Prez concluded the fine game by penalizing LORETTA C. $50.00 for bringing her baby grandson home safe and sound from Wisconsin after a long, trying ordeal. Congratulations, Loretta!

Raffle #7708 proved to be the winning score for a lucky Interact Student guest, who received $25.00 in lieu of the coveted wine.

Kip Herzog introduces the speaker.

October Program Chair, KIP “Squib Kick” HERZOG, then introduced our speaker, Kalil Namar, from the FBI Counterterrorism Unit, who gave an informative program on the efforts being made to successfully combat terrorism here and abroad. A book was donated in his name to the PHS Library for his well received program, as time expired and the meeting ended.

FBI Special Agent Bodak Broumand used "Kalil Namar" alias in Petaluma.

Don’t forget that next week is our “bye week”, so we’re dark on October 23. In the meantime, stay in bounds, manage the clock, and be sure to give “110%” (mathematically impossible, but worth a try nonetheless)!
