The weather was foggy and cold, but spirts were warm and cheerful as PRESIDENT BABE rang the meeting to order.

STEVE RUSTAD was called upon to lead us in song and after rambling and gambling a bit, we joined our voices in “America the Beautiful.”

JIM BECKER, who just returned from Thailand, provided us with the thought for the day. Jim spoke about something he witnessed first hand on his trip: Survival. The greetings, handshakes and hugs commenced.

RICK MOSSI was called upon to introduce the long list of visiting Rotarians: Bill McDill and Kathy McDill from Novato, Gunter Myberg from Sebastopol, Jim Furley from the Valley Club and late comer, Lisa Henton of Sebastopol introduced herself.

PDG Art Agnew brought his wife Evelyn to lunch.

We had many Rotarians with guests as the hall was nearly filled to capacity. There were no Interact students present.

SUNSHINE REPORT
LAURA RUNYON who has been away for an extended maternity leave was present and was happy to report on the birth of her five month old son, Shane Michael, who arrived five weeks early and weighed in at 5 pounds 15 ounces and measured 18.5 inches long. Congratulations Laura!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Captain KEITH SOLTS spoke about the upcoming “Rotary Day at the Kettles” which will be Saturday, December 18, 2004. Last year the Rotary Clubs manned two kettle sites for the Salvation Army and he is hoping for volunteers again for this year. This is a wonderful opportunity to become actively involved in the Yuletide Tradition of ringing a bell for those less fortunate. Shifts are only two hours long and you can contact Keith to sign up.

When is the Annual Rotary Christmas Party? Why, December 10, of course. KATHY O’CONNOR BURROUGHS was called on to explain the presence of two invitations which arrived in our mail boxes this week. The event is Friday, December 10, 2004, at Grazziano’s. No host cocktails begin at 6:30pm, buffet dinner at 7:45pm and dancing to follow. Please RSVP ASAP.

Santa’s main elf, aka TOM BAKER, announced the Children's Holiday Gift Program which will be in full swing soon. Volunteers are need to shop for gifts as well as delivery on December 16. The club will be distributing gifts to 250 needy children in Petaluma and many drivers are needed. Please call Tom to volunteer.

HARVEY FREETLY announced the dictionary distribution will begin the first of December. STEVE RUSTAD will be overseeing the delivery. Please call to help with distribution. A moment of silence was asked by our President in memory of RON HARRIS’ father who passed away this past week. Our prayers are with Ron and his family.

Shirley McDonald and John Dado.

JOHN DADO took the microphone and presented on behalf of the Foundation, the Bob McDonald Award to the Petaluma Community Guild. The Guild assists local children who otherwise couldn’t afford them eyeglasses.

Lynn Butler and Shirley McDonald.

Lynn Butler, president of the Guild, was presented with a check for $1,709.

Past President JIM MICKELSON was called upon, as was our District Governor, BRUCE CAMPBELL, to induct our club’s newest member, BRIDGET DOHERTY. Bridget was brought in the club by ROBERT MITCHELL who was a good friend of Bridget’s father. Welcome Bridget! We are confident you will be an asset to our club.

Andy Kvalheim and Karen Van Bebber enjoy the Birthday Table.

Hold on to your hats because you may never see this again. PRESIDENT BABE fined himself! He felt he needed to part with some cash because he didn’t introduce the District Governor’s wife, ELAINE CAMPBELL. Anything else you would like to make amends for, Mr. President? Perhaps there is more, because PRESIDENT BABE quickly turned attention to . . .

. . . KATHY O’CONNOR BURROUGHS. Of course we all thought KATHY was going to be fined for the dueling invitations; however, Dr. Kathy recently ran out of gas in her beautiful blue Porsche. KATHY was most gracious and donated to the fine can. I have a hunch, the President isn’t done with her yet.

Lorettta gives Babe the old heave-ho.

RAFFLE
First Lady, ELAINE CAMPBELL was asked to pull a ticket for the raffle and the lucky ticket holder was LORETTA CATAROZOLI. Loretta was the winner of a premium bottle of wine.

Jet lag? What jet lag?

SPEAKER
A rather jet lagged ED FULLERTON who just returned from Thailand the night before was called upon to introduce our DISTRICT GOVERNER BRUCE CAMPBELL.

DG BRUCE gave an inspiring talk about Rotary.

District Governor prepares to give Babe the old heave-ho.

Bev Campbell, DG Bruce Campbell, Jeannette Clark, and President Babe.

The meeting was promptly adjourned at 1:30pm. Remember we are dark next Thursday. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

SPECIAL VETERANS DAY EDITION

The weekly meeting began after a fabulous meal prepared by Bill Dator. PRESIDENT BABE AMARAL called on STEVE RUSTAD, who lead us through “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and KEITH SOLTS gave the invocation. He called on us to pray for the veterans and to give thanks for their sacrifices. AL KAPLAN then introduced visiting Rotarians.

HARVEY FREETLY announced he would be stepping down as the Chairman of the Dictionary Program and JOHN DADO will be assuming his duties. TAWNY TESCONI will be filling in for HARVEY’S sign in table duties. We wish these two individuals good luck and we must be prepared to assist them, because it will take many of us to fill the void HARVEY leaves behind. There are few members among us who have made a greater impact then HARVEY. His accomplishments are not only significant in our community, but they have served as a model for Rotary International.

TOM BAKER announced the Children’s Christmas Party is December 16 and volunteers are needed for various duties: shopping, wrapping, delivering and attending. Kathy Burroughs announced the Member Christmas Party will be December 10 at 6:30pm at Graziano’s Restaurant. Cost is $50 per person.

LEE BEAN announced the passing of beloved member, MIKE MADICK, and we all took a moment to remember a great man.

PRESIDENT BABE moved onto the money raising portion of the meeting and harassed a few people for their recent exploits:
KATHY BURROUGHS - $100 for becoming a grandmother (after only 4 years of marriage!)
BILL DATOR – $50 for his District Governor’s extravaganza
RALPH BETTINELLI – $25 for his Colorado hunting experience
RICK VAN BEBBER – $50 for his recent publicity stunt
ROBERT MITCHELL – $200 for a host of activities, including marriage, a new house, and vacations
WALLY BRAGDON – $50 for his recent National Parks tour

CLARK ROSEN drew the winning raffle ticket and took home a bottle of wine.

JOANNE FERRIS introduced our guest speaker, John Dell’Osso. He gave terrific presentation on the Pt. Reyes National Seashore and reminded us of the amazing national treasure that lies in our backyard. The natural beauty and species diversification truly make the park a unique location. Thank you, John, for your time and effort.

Remembering Mike Madick

Mike Madick
1941-2004

Dr. Mike was a kind and gentle soul. He was a quiet and disciplined gentleman who accomplished so many things without seeking the spotlight. He was always a calm voice and his advice was well respected. He gave so much and asked for nothing in return. Several years ago when I was visiting Petaluma for the holidays, I cracked a tooth. It was Christmas Eve and I knew my misery would continue until after the holiday. Mike was scheduled to visit relatives in the East Bay, but he postponed his departure, opened up his office and took care of my problem. He asked for nothing in return, but he received my respect and gratitude. As an incoming Rotarian, he taught me about the history and mission of Rotary at the Fireside Meeting. I was fortunate to know him through my friendship with his son, Greg, as a fellow Rotarian, as a parishioner at St. Vincent, and as a PGCC member. He leaves behind a wonderful family and a legacy of service and sacrifice. May he rest in peace.

Next week our District Governor will be in attendance. Please do not miss the meeting.

God Bless.

November 18 - District Governor Bruce Campbell
November 25 - Thanksgiving; Club Dark
December 2 - Another interesting program
December 9 - Club dark (Holiday party Friday evening)
December 10 - Members' Holiday Party

This week the club was dark as Friendship Feasts were being attended by many of our members. I came across this from an old friend and thought you might enjoy reminiscing.

Do You Remember When???

It took five minutes for the TV warm up?

Nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got home from school?

When a quarter was a decent allowance?

You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny?

All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels?

You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time?

And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot?

Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box?

It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents?

They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed. . and they did?

No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked?

Playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game?

Stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?

And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace, and share it with the children of today?

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home?

Summers were filled with bike rides, baseball games, Hula Hoops, bowling and visits to the pool, and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.

To remember what a double dog dare is, read on and remember that the perfect age is somewhere between old enough to know better and too young to care.

How many of these do you remember?

Candy cigarettes
Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water inside
Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles
Coffee shops with tableside jukeboxes
Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum
Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers
Newsreels before the movie
Telephone numbers with a word prefix...(Raymond 4-601).
Party lines
Peashooters
Howdy Doody
45 RPM records
Green Stamps
Hi-Fi's
Metal ice cubes trays with levers
Mimeograph paper
Beanie and Cecil
Roller-skate keys
Cork pop guns
Drive ins
Studebakers
Reel-To-Reel tape recorders
Tinkertoys
Erector Sets
The Fort Apache Play Set
Lincoln Logs
15 cent McDonald hamburgers
5 cent packs of baseball cards with that awful pink slab of bubble gum
Penny candy
35 cent a gallon gasoline
Jiffy Pop popcorn

Do you remember a time when...

Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"?
Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do Over!"?
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest?
It wasn't odd to have two or three "Best Friends"?
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was "cooties"?
Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute commercials for action figures?
"Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense?
Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team?
War was a card game?
Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?
Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin?
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!!!!!!
