GENE rose to the occasion and we all sang, “I’m a Rambler, I’m a Gambler” as GENE came forward. We then sang “God Bless America”.

PRESIDENT BABE then asked TED ADKINS to give the “Thought for the Day”. Ted started off by saying we should enjoy each day and smell the roses. He reminded us to self discover and self-express ourselves daily, and most of all Cherish Every Day.

The normal Petaluma Rotary warm welcome, handshakes, and hugs then took place.

Several members were then fined for not wearing their club badges.

Lived in Africa, Hawaii, and was a charter member and Past President of a Rotary Club in Thailand. She has a daughter attending U.C. Davis and enjoys Petaluma.

Those male members who are coming to the meetings in shorts are going to be subject to the wrath of our President — however he thinks Bermudas are OK!.

President BABE AMARAL opened, Past-President GENE BENEDETTI led us in song, and RICK MOSSI delivered the Thought for the Day. Handshakes and hugs ensued.

CARRIE PIERSON introduced the visiting Rotarians, followed by the introduction of our guests of Rotarians, including Prez Babe’s son (Jerry),

. . . and Past-President DON RAMATICI’s grandson (Cpl. Steve Johnson), who recently returned safely from a tour of duty in Iraq. He received a standing ovation for his service.

RICH POREMBA then sadly reported the passing of our exchange student’s father-- our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Past President DAVE AMUNDSEN then gave us the details of a Rotary Fundraiser at Infineon Raceway, followed by Prez Babe’s reminder of our upcoming Rotary District Conference on May 20-22 in Rohnert Park—100% club attendance is encouraged. Call Club Secretary STEVE OLMSTED for details. The Prez also reminded us of the Club’s Paul Harris Fellowship fund matching program. See Past President ONITA PELLEGRINI for details.

Past President JOHN DADO then had the honor of inducting

. . . JUDI ALLEWELT (a former teacher who is now a real estate agent) into our Club—welcome, Judi, and kudos to your sponsor, TOM BRANDAL.

The Prez then announced the April Anniversaries, including Past President JIM McCAFFREY’s 54th, which somehow resulted in Jim paying a $75 fine for his audience with Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1979. Congratulations, Jim (and Mary).

GENE BENEDETTI was then fined $50 for the appearance of his alter ego (Clo Cow) on the Evening Magazine show.

BILL GROVERMAN and RICK MOSSI, basketball players par excellence, and Bill’s City League team sponsor, GARY BRODIE (Brodie’s Tire & Brake), were then fined for their basketball exploits: $50 each from Bill and Gary, and $75 from Rick plus a $5 wisecrack enhancement! Thanks, guys.

Hawaii seemed to be the destination du jour for many of our members, including those who attended the recent wedding of STEVE OLMSTED’s daughter, featuring Steve as the proud father, DICK WEBER as the kind father-in-law, LORETTA CATAROZOLI as the matchmaker,

. . . and TOM BAKER as the toastmaster (hic!). Steve paid a whopping $500 fine, while Tom kicked in another $100 (Tom figured it was cheaper than if he had to pay $1.00 per drink he tossed down in his toasts!!). Thanks one and all, and congratulations to Steve and Dick—they make a lovely couple, don’t you think?

President-Elect LEROY BEAN and CONNIE HEIZER were also caught up in the “aloha spirit” to the tune of $100 each for their recent trips to Hawaii, albeit non-wedding related! Apparently emboldened by the slew of C-note fines being paid with such aplomb,

. . . the Prez concluded the fine session with a $100 fine on SUZANNE WELLS for her recent trips to London and New York. Thanks, Lee and ladies.

JAMES BURLESON won the raffle and turned his blue rock into wine!

ERIK GUNHEIM then introduced our celebrated and well-decorated speaker, retired USAF 4-star General George J. Eade, who gave a very informative program on the Cold War era, and concluded his presentation with a classy, professional salute and heartfelt thanks to DON RAMATICI’s grandson (Steve) for his service to our Country. The good General received a Club memento as a token of our appreciation and a book was donated to the PHS Library in his name.

The awed Prez then adjourned the meeting with a bang of his gavel on the bell, but not before he quizzed Past President JIM MICKELSON on the Four Way Test as a result of some more presidential notes that have slipped off ye old podium! See you next week.

Three veterans: General Eade, Colonel Steve Johnson, Lieutenant Gene Benedetti.

Reminder

Excuse yourself to the speaker and Babe if you need to leave early.
