President, TOM “Where’s The Flag” BRANDAL, opened the meeting, then (after finding the Flag located behind him) led us in the Pledge, . . .

. . . and had HERB BUNDESEN lead us in the song (God Bless America). The customary handshakes, hugs and busses among members ensued.

TED ADKINS delivered the Thought for the Day (a quote from his old COP teammate, Eddie Le Baron), . . .

. . . JUDI ALLEWELT introduced our visiting Rotarians, followed by the introduction of all the guests of Rotarians who joined us for lunch, including DON RAMATICI’S grandsons (Andy and Dan), LORETTA CATAROZOLI’S good friend (Alice Radke), BABE AMARAL’s good friend (Jim McDowell and his son Pat, who was a past Rotary Scholarship award recipient), and JOHN DADO’S good friend (Mary McCaffrey).

Sunshine Report: JEANETTE CLARK reported that LOU STEINBERG is at PVH, but doing fine; ANDY KVALHEIM reported that DAVE AMUNDSEN underwent another surgery, and is recovering well; .and KATHY O’CONNOR reported that BANO CUMMINGS is doing better with her treatment. The July birthday table was nowhere to be found (probably hidden behind the Flag!), so there was no fine to the July B-day babes… but Set-up Committee beware!!

WILL SOPER announced that 1) the Golf Tournament is now full, but all members are welcome to attend the prime rib dinner (for a nominal fee, of course!), and 2) there are still a couple of corporate hole sponsorships left – call Will if you’re interested. Next, STEVE POWELL announced that LARRY JONAS has booked a 2+ day repositioning cruise from Vancouver to San Francisco on September 20-22 for all Club members, first come, first serve – call Steve or Larry for details.

The Prez then concluded our announcements by hawking credit cards for Rotary International (boy, times must be tough!) – call the Prez or Secretary STEVE OLMSTED if you’re interested.

The Prez then proceeded to levy fines aplenty on many of the usual suspects. First, he dinged BABE AMARAL for $20 because Babe was late to meet his guests at the meeting (you could almost see the relief on Babe’s face, who probably thought the Prez was going to fine him big $$ for not leaving the bar until after 5 p.m. after the last meeting… or so my spies tell me!!).

Speaking of faces, GARY BRODIE was fined $20 for “having a guilty look” on his (as mysterious music blared over the Prez’ PA system all the while!).

President-elect CLARK ROSEN was then fined $20 for not signing the Club’s bank signature cards in timely fashion, followed by a $75 fine on JAMES BURLESON for a “vacation” to Springfield, Indiana for his father-in-law’s retirement party.

DAN LIBARLE was fined $20 to reclaim his Rotary Badge which was “found” in the parking lot by DON RAMATICI, a “good Samaritan” if ever there was one (si habla 4-Way Test?).

The Prez concluded the fines by assessing a $20 phone tax on MICHAEL CARUANA for playing cell phone games (or texting his son) during meetings!

After numerous cries of “raffle!”, “raffle!” from the crowd, the Prez finally remembered it, and pulled ticket #315866, which was good enough for one of our guests (Alice Radke) to win the wine!

DON RAMATICI then introduced our speaker, his grandson Andy Samuelson, who, after commenting on his grandpa’s “Obama-like” loquaciousness, proceeded to inform us on his upcoming cross-country bicycle trip to raise money for ALS research and honor the memory of his late uncle, John Ramatici, a member of our club who was tragically stricken with the disease. A book was donated in Andy’s name to the PHS Library, and he received a Rotary memento and tons of well wishes for a program well received (note: donations can be made at biketripforALS.com).

After the Prez read a thank you card from the District Governor for his visit to our club and the gifts he and his wife received, the meeting was adjourned by a visibly relieved Prez (hang in there Tom, you only have 50 or so more meetings to go)!

Rotary 2009-10 Theme: The Future of Rotary is in your Hands

On the fourth Thursday in July we met at Mister Magoo’s. The day was a beautiful summer day. Lunch featured ‘grown up’ fare (as opposed to last week’s PBJ’s and cheetos!!), which was good since our guest this week was DISTRICT GOVERNOR KIRK BROWN, his wife Ellen, Assistant DG Pamela Tuft, and Immediate Past DG ED FULLERTON and his wife Carol. Each member of the club was given a Rotary International pin depicting this year’s theme, “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.”

PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge of allegiance.

TED ADKINS led the club (“with gusto”) in a rousing rendition of God Bless America.

MIKE BADDELEY found that giving the thought for the day was easier without peanut butter “gumming up the works” and made us all laugh out loud with a parable about how the State of California is doing business.

After club greetings, DAVE BARBIERI introduced a visiting Rotarian all the way from Massachusetts. There were a number of Rotarians with guests including Past Presidents Ernie Jensen (1981-82) and Royce Van Bebber (1978-79).

MICHAEL CARUANA shared his thoughts about the Arts and Equestrian Festival.

WILL SOPER announced that the Golf Tournament foursomes are full, and gave other details about the event.

LEE REPOSA gave us an update on the RYLA Campus dinner.

PRESIDENT TOM thanked those who attended the reception for District Governor Kirk Brown at the Pelican Art Gallery.

PRESIDENT TOM apologized for last week’s lunch menu and figured that his “Directors of Food Service,” BRIDGET DOHERTY and WILL SOPER, had something to do with it. They claimed only to be following his “direction to provided “healthy, balanced meals”.

PRESIDENT TOM’s next inquiry was to GARY BRODIE who looked “guilty” of having “stolen” PRESIDENT TOM’s car after last week’s meeting…something about a drink token…and even with legal representation from MIKE BADDELEY was made to pay $10.

ONITA PELLEGRINI paid the club $100 for her new granddaughter (giving her 3 boys and 3 girls!), and generously gave another $50 to Cool Kids Campus . . .

. . . (followed almost immediately by another $50 donation from Carol Fullerton).

JIM BECKER was fined $10 his wisecrack about lunch and another $50 in advance for his impending trip to Croatia (where he plans to research nude beaches)…JIM had another $20 added later in the meeting to get his checkbook back.

ROY MUSICK won the raffle and a bottle of wine.

This week’s speaker was our esteemed District Governor Kirk Brown (or “Captain Kirk” as he’s known to his Board). He was introduced by Assistant DG Pamela Tuft. DG Brown spoke eloquently about Rotary and how Polio Plus was the project that changed him into a lifelong Rotarian. He urged us all to “live long and prosper” and reminded us that the future of Rotary is “in your hands”.

PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL opened the meeting, or at least he tried.

More than a few members were having flashbacks to childhood, perhaps because of the day’s menu: “Tom’s Favorite Childhood Lunch” of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Cheetos, Jell-o, and animal crackers.

A complete regression to immaturity, not a long journey for some in our midst, was prompted by ringing of the bell, which somehow sounded like a school bell signaling recess, and a large contingent filed out to the yard.

Unable to organize a good game of dodge ball, almost everyone returned. “Almost,” because BABE AMARAL and TOM BAKER, were last seen leaving with guests, presumably in search of more grown-up lunch.

Our president artfully regained control, leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Songmeister BARNEY FAUSS had us ramblin’ and gamblin’ and asking for God’s blessings on America.

A thought for the day was delivered by the always eloquent JIM McCAFFREY.

LARRY JONAS filled us in on the upcoming Art and Equestrian Festival, urging all to pitch in to help and especially to sell and purchase tickets

A report on next month’s Golf Tournament was given by meisterduffer WILL SOPER.

A number of members fell victim to the Wrath of Tom, as fines were levied upon . . .

GARY BRODIE for zipping around a large chunk of our great land on a motorcycle . . .

WALLY BRAGDON for a little too much relaxation on a cruise ship . . .

GAIL CARDAROPOLI for her road trip with twin grandkids . . . . CLARK ROSEN for a misplaced badge . . .

RALPH SARTORI as atonement for a milk shortage at his own de-bunking . . . and

LARRY JONAS, who has sculpted his way to fame not quite on a level with Michelangelo.

WALLY BRAGDON introduced our own MARCUS BENEDETTI, who told the very impressive story of a great family business that has led the way in quality milk and milk products. Marcus expressed his gratitude to our entire community for its support of Clover-Stornetta, which obviously believes strongly in giving back.

It was time for the first meeting of the year under our new leader, PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL. Besides the new leader, there was a new venue. By the looks of the large crowd, everyone remembered to go to Mister McGoo’s.

The crowed seemed to be pleased with the huge assortment of food from the buffet. There was clam chowder, salad, cold cuts for sandwiches with all the trimmings, salad, tortellini, oven roasted potatoes chicken picatta, vegetables and cookies for dessert.

I cannot forget the huge choice of beverages from the bar.

The bell sounded at precisely 12:30 and PRESIDENT TOM brought the meeting to order. PRESIDENT TOM led us in the Pledge to the Flag.

Since BARNEY FAUSS was front and center, he led us in the traditional Rotary theme song, ”I’m a Rambler”. He continued with “God Bless America” but sounded a little bit better than usual.

TED ADKIN’S daughter from Palm Desert and her beautiful voice helped keep the gang in tune.

JUDI ALLEWELT was eloquent as usual with the “Thought for the Day”.

The usual hugs and handshakes quickly followed. TED ADKINS introduced the visiting Rotarian, Mo Jacobsen, from the Petaluma Valley Club. The Rotarians with guests were then introduced. Lots of people came to check out PRESIDENT TOM’S first meeting.

BARNEY let us know that DAVE AMUNDSEN had just downed a couple of pints. He soon clarified that it was pints of blood and not what he usually downs. That cost him $5.00. Please get well, DAVE. We miss you.

WILL SOPER had the first announcement. Please sign up for the Golf Tournament on the web site. The tournament is August 10th.

LARRY JONAS reminded everyone of the Art & Equestrian Festival this Sunday, July 19th. Remember this is a fundraiser for our Club. Not sure why LARRY was fined $10. I guess because he’s LARRY.

Mo Jacobsen offered up free tickets to see the comedian, Rick Reynolds, who will be performing at the Cinnabar Theater. I think I saw NANCY COOLEY and KATHY O’CONNOR interested in a fun evening.

Don’t forget to let STEVE know if you’re interested in the SCARC meeting sponsored by the Sebastopol Sunrise Club on July 30th.

The District Governor will be in town on July 22nd. All three clubs will be hosting a reception for the DG on that day at the Pelican Art Gallery. Please be on your best behavior on the 23rd for his visit to our Club.

TED ADKINS and WALLY BRAGDON were called on to please stand by the PREZ. They both had issues with their calendars. It seems TED showed up last week for the meeting. He acted like he was just going to visit GARY BRODIE across the street. GARY wasn’t in attendance to verify his story, so no fine was assessed. WALLY wasn’t so lucky. He didn’t check his computer for the correct date of the last board meeting. He was playing racquetball with BARNEY. He was assessed $25 which was submitted as an IOU.

TOM BAKER had a little faux pas at the debunking. His cell phone went off while PAST PRESIDENT RALPH was speaking. WILL SOPER was the culprit who called TOM. WILL ended up with the $20 fine.

JAMES BURLESON was really nice to invite Don Benson to our meeting. He told Don to be at McGoo’s at 11:45 but didn’t show up to meet his guest until 12:15. That was $25 out of his pocket. I hope JAMES paid for Don’s lunch.

Thank you MICHAEL NISTLER for passing around the microphone.

Our new PRESIDENT remembered the raffle. The first ticket drawn had no response. BARNEY was digging in his pockets but couldn’t come up with the ticket. The second ticket drawn produced FRED WULFF who walked away with a nice bottle of wine. BARNEY was still looking for his ticket.

Our very own ONITA PELLEGRINI was our speaker for the day. Before she talked about the chamber, she called on PRESIDENT TOM to let us know about a new addition to his family. His daughter had a baby boy on July 2nd. Melvin James weighted in at 8lbs. 11 oz. Proud grandpa donated $100 to the Club.

ONITA did a great job of answering lots of questions about the chamber, city council and the general politics of the City.

Our PRESIDENT concluded his first meeting with a thank you to Tony McGaughey and his staff for a wonderful lunch. He also mentioned the tradition of wearing our beloved HARVEY FREETLY’S ties which always brings a smile.

Be sure to attend next week’s meeting for another great speaker from our Club. MARCUS BENEDETTI will give us the history of Clover-Stornetta Farms and the latest news from the dairy industry..

Meeting adjourned.
