There was winter in the air but it was warm and jolly inside Mister Magoo’s as Rotarians and guests gathered at the last meeting of 2009 — the “Holiday Social.”

As we sipped wine and champagne, snacked on hors d’oeuvres, and nibbled a light lunch PRESIDENT TOM conducted a brief business meeting.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and song JOHN DADO delivered a holiday Thought for the Day about our distributions of Christmas gifts and third-grader dictionaries.

There weren’t any visiting Rotarians but there were a good number “Rotarians-by-marriage.” PRESIDENT TOM had MICHAEL CARUANA, JOHN DADO, SHERRY BURWEN, LEE BEAN, and AL CATTALINI introduce their spouses and was ready to move onto the next order of business when he suddenly remembered that he also had a spouse. Kathy Brandal let him know that he had come “this close.” (All’s well that ends well!)

Seated at the December birthday table were TAWNY TESCONI, LORETTA CATAROZOLI, BANO CUMMINGS, and MICHAEL CARUANA (and Diane).

Sunshine Report: Mary McCaffrey is well on her way to recovery and is now receiving phone calls. She reports that our prayers have worked! And WALLY BRAGDON continues to mend slowly and needs more weeks of quiet relaxation.

PRESIDENT TOM thanked all those who helped with our holiday gift program — the shoppers, the wrappers, the deliverers, and the Petaluma realtors. All together we gave gifts to 115 kids in 51 families!

HERB BUNDESEN expressed appreciation for the Rotarians who volunteered to ring the bell at local Salvation Army kettles — another program that brightens Christmas for those less fortunate.

JUDI ALLEWELT announced that she’d collected over $600 for Polio Plus at recent meetings.

LORETTA CATAROZOLI reminded members that dictionaries would be distributed shortly after the first of the year and that now was the time to sign up for your assignment. Please contact her for more information.

Get your tickets early! RICK MOSSI has Super Raffle tickets available for Rotarians who want to get a head start by selling tickets to their holiday visitors. Mark your calendars for the February 19 Crab Feed and Super Raffle.

AL CATTALINI again discussed the January 15 luncheon at the Coast Guard Training Center at Two Rock. Full information is available at the Club website. Current members are already on the approved entry list; so are their spouses/guests from the past two luncheons. If you need to correct your name (so it matches your photo ID) or want to add a first-time spouse or guest, you can do so at the website. Or call Al at 763-2946 if you have not yet discovered the Internet.

JOHN DADO announced that he had a full bus for the January 22 Rotary Day at the Races. But he encouraged late-comers to get on the waiting list as openings sometimes occur.

BANO CUMMINGS gladly paid a fine for her “10-month vacation to Cancerland.” She beamed that she was delighted to be alive and healthy. We’re delighted too, Bano, and enjoy seeing you at our meetings again!

MICHAEL CARUANA paid a $40 fine for replacing his Cadillac (his eighth!) with a Mercedes Benz. And a new half-ton pickup cost DAN LIBARLE $50.

AL CATTALINI paid a $25 fine when RICK VAN BEBBER observed that the link to the Interact Club area of our website was mislabeled “Internet Club.” (How many members even know that there is an Interact Club area of our website?)

Sharon Dado won the raffle and took home the bottle of wine. Maybe she’ll share it with John. After all, he did introduce her today!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Year. Remember, the Club will be dark the next two Thursdays (Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve).

WOW! This is the first impression guests had when they experienced our Annual Christmas Party. Pazzo was beautifully decorated and the sights, smells and sounds were full of Holiday cheer.

PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL and his family were in perfect form, greeting us all as we entered the building.

PAST PRESIDENT LOU STEINBERG was in attendance and smiling from ear-to-ear – only to be outdone by the smiles from the membership who were happy to see him with us.

Even PAST PRESIDENT BABE AMARAL had replaced his usual gruff salutations with warm hugs (ladies only) and good wishes (only people he likes). There was a large collection of PAST PRESIDENTS (and their partners), including ONITA PELLEGRINI, LEE BEAN, and TAWNY TESCONI.

The music and DJ were fantastic and kept the crowd entertained during the wonderful dinner and dessert.

Our own members, including BARNEY FAUSS, STEVE OLMSTEAD and ANDY KVALHEIM did a fantastic job serenading the crowd and truly helped bring home the spirit of the season.

The dance floor was also full of spirit as members and guests shook their holiday “booty”.

PRESIDENT ELECT CLARK ROSEN got his first taste of running the Club and he did a marvelous job.

It is the spirit of the season that helps rejuvenate the heritage of our Club. This is a time of remembrance and thanks (as well as over-eating) and our Club has helped so many people over the past 80-plus years that we should be thankful that we have been in the position to help others. The strength of our impact lies in the hearts of our members, both past and present, and our club has a BIG heart.

That tradition continued when PAST PRESIDENT BABE AMARAL announced our new PRESIDENT ELECT NOMINEE –

JOANNE FERRIS. She was warmly received by the members and gave a touching tribute to her father, who 35 years ago was President of our Club. Congratulations, Joanne. We know you will do a fantastic job and all members should be excited about the upcoming year.

After the announcement, the dancing (and drinking) continued. It was a perfect end to the perfect evening. Thank you to all on the Holiday Party Committee for a wonderful event.

Happy Holidays.
