PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN called the meeting to order and welcomed all in attendance.

PRESIDENT CLARK led the club in The Pledge of Allegiance and then called on BARNEY FAUSS to lead us in song. Barney got things rolling with “I’m a Rambler, I’m a Gambler” followed by “God Bless America”.

SHERRI BURWEN gave the Thought for the Day which ended in “GO GIANTS’!! The customary hugs and handshakes followed.

The lone visiting Rotarian from The Petaluma Valley Club was introduced by JUDI ALLEWELT. Our only guest was introduced by RICK MOSSI.

PRESIDENT CLARK then gave the Sunshine Report. President Clark reported that Kenton Clark, husband of Past President JEANNETTE CLARK, was doing well after recent surgery.

PRESIDENT CLARK then announced the October Birthdays. As it turned not a single Rotarian with an October birthday was present. The consensus of the club was to fine each one of them when they do show up.

PRESIDENT CLARK then reported on the “Polio Walk” that took place this past Sunday. He gave a special Thank You to Past President LOU STEINBERG and BANO CUMMINGS for arranging for students from the Petaluma High School Interact Club to attend the event. Our club was the only club represented with Interact Students.

PRESIDENT CLARK then called upon new member LEN MYGATT to give his craft talk. Len informed the club of his involvement in the Plastic Containers for preserving food and how he developed a method to seal a plastic container with a metal top. He said this type of packaging is used in the seafood business but has potential in other food products. Len also told the club of his hobby as a blacksmith and how he has created many art pieces using blacksmithing methods.

PRESIDENT CLARK then asked AL KAPLAN how retirement was. Al reported GREAT!! and reported that he took a 6 week cruise followed by a 17 day road trip thru 17 states which covered 5,000 miles. Al ended by offering to pay a fine for his retirement.

DAVID BARBIERI was called upon by PRESIDENT CLARK to tell the club about his travels. David reported that he took a 10 day trip to Italy and enjoyed every minute of it. The food was great, the wine was excellent and the limoncello was out of this world. David presented President Clark with a cup and dish but still ended up paying a fine.

The raffle was won by STEVE POWELL who left the cash in the bag but walked away with a bottle of wine.

KIP HERZOG introduced our speaker, Arnie Riebli, President of The California Egg Association, who reported on his involvement in the egg, feed, and energy produced using by products from the poultry business. Arnie gave a very extensive report on the world food supply and how farmers will have modify their methods.

October 28 - Arnie Riebli - President of the California Egg Association
November 4 - County Supervisor Mike Kerns recalls his career of local service
November 11 - Dr. Peter Bernstein - Veterans returning from Iraq and the mid-East

PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN opened our meeting on or about 12:30 p.m. and handed the duty of song leader to HERB BUNDESEN (My Country Tis of Thee).

President Elect JOANNE FERRIS gave us the Thought for the Day (great quotes!). The customary handshakes and hugs amongst the members ensued.

We had no visiting Rotarians however we had a few guests. GEOFF ELLIS introduced his father, Past-President TOM BRANDAL introduced a friend, and Past-President LOU STEINBERG introduced our soon to be member, MIKE STAUBER. The Prez then gave us a Sunshine Report: shockingly for the first time since your editor has been a member, we did not have any. (that’s a great thing!)

Back to that soon to be member, MIKE STAUBER… well thanks to his sponsor Past-President LOU STEINBERG and Past-District Governor ED FULLERTON, he was initiated into our club and has become our newest member. Congratulations and a Big Welcome to MIKE.

JIM BECKER gave us a rundown of our upcoming speakers. He did note that our speaker for next week, Amy Gutierrez, SF Giants Broadcaster, will hopefully not be able to make it due to business circumstances. Well thanks to your wonderful editor’s tardiness in writing this week’s Rota-Teller, we can firmly state that Amy will not be speaking this week. Congrats to the SF Giants and all their fans.

Past-President LOU STEINBERG just returned from visiting his daughter’s family in Westfield, New Jersey. While spending time there, he couldn’t get away from Rotary so he ventured off to the Westfield club and brought us home one of their club flags.

PRESIDENT CLARK then called upon Past-President LARRY JONAS to find out what he’s been up to in retirement. Besides lots of naps, he took a camping trip to Oregon and due to his retired fixed income status; he lived liked trailer trash and took advantage of every senior discount. Must be rough being retired LARRY. (work = naps, trailers = high end RV’s, and normal costs = half price)

The winner of the raffle was Past-President TOM BRANDAL’s guest. Not only did he win the raffle, he found the brown rock and won the money pot. Later Tom’s guest was heard saying he might join our club since the odds were better here than the casinos.

CHRIS ALBERTSON then introduced our speaker, Larry Anderson, our current Petaluma Fire Chief, who gave us an overview of the Petaluma Fire Department, described how efficiently it is run, and how the city’s money problems are affecting our local public safety. Larry also spoke briefly about some of our other departments including law enforcement. He informed us that police need heroes too and that is why God created Fire Fighters.

Whereupon, our President wished everybody a wonderful day and adjourned the meeting.

Dear Rotarians,

Greg Freitas, Kathy Flamson, and Carol Fullerton pose before the meeting.

Our magnificent leader called the meeting to order . . .

. . . and BARNEY took the stage to lead us in the usual Rambler and God Bless America.

Len Mygatt delivers the Thought for the Day.

We didn’t have any visiting Rotarians aside from our esteemed guest, the District Governor, Jim Flamson, and the Assistant Governor, Greg Freitas.

ED FULLERTON, ONITA PELLEGRINI and MIKE BADDELEY all brought guests. Mike brought RALPH PELTON and it was good to see him back in the fold at our club.

The only sunshine report was obviously a good one as AL CATTALINI was at the meeting and working. RICK GORMAN and MELISSA KOSITZIN received their chicken badges after much hard work and it cost them 5 bucks each.

Ed Fullerton unveils "Flash Flamson."

MICHAEL CARUANA was fined on two fronts. He had just returned from Saudi Arabia to launch a new business venture and his son had just got a teaching job after getting his PhD in archeology.

Your editor was fined unjustly for appearing in an Argus Courier advertisement and failing to promote Rotary as the best thing going on Thursdays.

RALPH SARTORI possessed the winning raffle ticket and drew the blue rock for a fresh bottle of wine.

Greg Freitas got up and introduced the program — our District Governor.

District Governor Jim Flamson talked about some interesting things including our continuing successful effort to wipe polio from the face of the earth. There are only 4 countries left on earth with any incidences of polio and the numbers are very low. We are almost there. He also talked about the goal for all Rotary Clubs is to get bigger, better and bolder this year. He also mentioned that there will be a Rotary Foundation dinner in Calistoga on Saturday, October 24th.

A surprised AL CATTALINI received the “Generator” award from the District Governor.

With the end of the program, our President adjourned the meeting with 5 minutes to spare.

President CLARK ROSEN opened the meeting (at 12:30 pm or thereabouts), BARNEY FAUSS led us in song (Gypo and God Bless America), . . .

. . . and JAMES BECKER delivered the Thought for the Day (some funny golfer-caddy jokes). The customary handshake, hugs and busses amongst members ensued.

AL KAPLAN then introduced our visiting Rotarians, followed by the introduction of guests of Rotarians and . . .

. . . a Sunshine Report from the Prez: AL CATTALINI is recovering nicely from his recent back surgery – hurry “back” Captain Al, we miss you! After the Prez acknowledged the October wedding anniversaries of our members, we were treated to a medley of announcements:

DAVID SOLO reminded us of the Rotary International Foundation coffee, and the upcoming (Oct. 23) District 5130 “Viva Rotary” dinner event complete with an open tequila bar - $80 buys you all the fun you can handle with $20 going towards your Paul Harris contribution. Past Rotary International President Frank Devlin will be the guest speaker – call Dave for more details, or to let him know if you can make a raffle prize donation (he needs at least 2).

JOANNE FERRIS reminded us about the Rotary District Vision Program, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 11 – call Joanne, ONITA PELLIGRINI, PAUL LOUNIBOS, or the Prez for details.

ONITA reported that our club was the only local Rotary Club to exceed the $2,000 goal for the Argus-Courier’s Salute to Rotary edition.

The Prez reminded us of the upcoming (10/24) Rotary World Polio Day ceremonies in San Francisco (a 1 ½ mile walk, followed by an evening dinner and reception) – call the Prez for details, and shared with us that our very own Petaluma City Council recognized Rotary at their October 4 meeting with a World Polio Day proclamation.

The Prez concluded the announcement segment of our meeting by reminding us that next week (Oct.14) our District Governor will be here and the Prez would like to see 100% attendance to support him.

The Prez then auctioned off some UC Davis Aggie football tickets (courtesy of Alumni, KIP HERZOG), and proceeded to fine MIKE BADDELEY $50.00 for sending his daughter (Jordy) to that prestigious university.

Gleefully seizing upon Rotarians’ obvious soft spot for their progeny, the Prez then fined GAIL CARDAROPOLI $50.00 for taking her grandson to Italy, . . .

. . . and STEVE OLMSTED $50.00 for going to Idaho to support his daughter, the President of the evening Rotary Club in Twin Falls.

Raffle #5692 proved to be the winning ticket for WHITNEY HALL and good enough for a nice bottle of locally produced wine.

RICK MOSSI then introduced our speaker, . . . .

. . . DICK HERMAN, from 101 Manufacturing, who gave a very informative program on manufacturing in our local area. He received a Rotary memento for his efforts and an autographed book will be donated in his name to a local high school library.
