With our bright, new, moth-proof banner as a backdrop, PRESIDENT CLARK convened the preantepenultimate luncheon meeting of his presidency by calling on MICHAEL NISTLER to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

LOU STEINBERG was up next in great songmaster form as he warmed the crowd with I’m a Rambler, . . . which flowed into God Bless America.

JIM McCAFFREY gave a serious thought for the day and then reverted to his Irish roots by concluding, "May you be in heaven a full half-hour before the devil knows you're dead."

A moment of silence was then observed in remembrance of long-time Rotarian Duke Iversen and Ralph Sartori’s mother, Eda.

DAVID SOLO introduced visiting Rotarians from Petaluma Sunrise and Santa Rosa Main. Rotarians with guests were JOANNE FERRIS (her husband Mike) and BABE AMARAL (Jim McDowell, who Babe identified as a “pain in the a--”).

PRESIDENT CLARK displayed and circulated a nice thank-you card from the members of the St. Vincent High School Jazz Ensemble.

Sunshine Report.. JOANNE FERRIS reported that BARNEY FAUSS had been hospitalized but was now recuperating at home and welcoming visitors to pull weeds in his yard. STEVE OLMSTED gave an update on DICK WEBER. He’s still hospitalized and on oxygen but is “coming back.”

May birthdays were celebrated by JAY PALM, DANNY FISH, JAMES BURLESON, and LEN MYGATT.

Supplemental Sunshine Report. JOANNE FERRIS reported that her liver had fared pretty well during her recent visit to New Orleans to attend the RI Convention.

MICHAEL CARUANA announced that tickets would soon be available for our Fourth Annual Petaluma Art and Equestrian Festival coming up on July 24. He noted that the horse virus recently in the news had been contained and should not be a problem for our event.

Offering a handy tip to our members, PRESIDENT CLARK reported that when he has difficulty sleeping at night he turns on the televised proceedings of the Petaluma Airport Commission. This must work since airport commissioner FRED FROST was able to smile without opening his eyes.

PAT CONKLIN happily accepted a $500 check from the Club to help underwrite the Sonoma-Marin Fair’s “Youth Ag Day” on September 23 where 1,000 local school kids (grades K-4) get exposed to agriculture.

PAT also plugged the Sonoma-Marin Fair coming up this June 22-26. She announced a special opportunity for Rotarians to staff the information booth at the fair. You’ll have an opportunity to serve your community and receive free fair admission as well. Available times are 12:30pm–4pm and 4pm–8pm on Wednesday and Thursday, and 12:00noon–4pm and 4pm–8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Shorter shifts are available. Call Pat at 283-3266.

MIKE STAUBER happily forked over $10 to receive his Chicken Badge.

ONITA PELLEGRINI invited members to “Come watch Clark run!” at his Debunking on June 24.

JAY PALM had the winning raffle ticket, pulled out a blue rock, and claimed a bottle of wine.

DAVID SOLO launched a special presentation on Rotary International programs for youth around the world including projects promoting maternal and child health, pure water and sanitation, and literacy and education.

After MICHAEL CARUANA described a recent club project equipping an elementary school in the mountains of Thailand, David reported the good news that our Club had met its goal of generating $10,000 for such programs.

The Club is still accepting (and will match) contributions for Polio Plus and Paul Harris fellowships. For matching funds, let DAVID SOLO know within a week for Polio Plus and by May 31 for Paul Harris.

The highlight of the RI presentation was the awarding of a Paul Harris fellowship to recently retired county supervisor Mike Kerns.

Before the award and Mike’s appreciative remarks he was introduced by current Second District Supervisor David Rabbitt . . .

. . . who was introduced by former Petaluma councilman Mike O’Brien . . .

. . . who was introduced by current Petaluma councilman CHRIS ALBERTSON. Wow!

PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN opened our meeting on or about 12:30 p.m. at the wonderful Mr. McGoo’s. He began with a friendly “Welcome ” and the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by our song leader PAST PRESIDENT LOU STEINBERG (God Bless America).

Then the Thought of the Day was given by our own PRESIDENT CLARK. The PREZ gave a quote from the great Martin Luther King. The customary handshakes and hugs amongst the members ensued.

Unlike the usual, we did not have any visiting Rotarians today. JOE TAMBE introduced his guest and LEN MYGATT introduced a family of guests. He had with him a past art student, Sarah, and her parents. She also brought and displayed some of her great metal artwork.

Finally it seems everyone was healthy so we did not have any Sunshine Reports.

PRESIDENT CLARK presented our unique and one of kind “Chicken Badge” to PAT CONKLIN

We recently received many Thank You cards from our contributions to the community. PRESIDENT CLARK handed them out for everyone to read. They included a student who received the Community Achievement Award, one who received the John Ramatici Memorial Scholarship, and the District 3 Dairy Princess Program.

It was announced that we still have our clubs apparel for sale. They include polo shirts, pull over sweatshirts, and others –they all have our Chicken Logo on them. Get them now, they’re going fast!

The fines began starting with PAST PRESIDENT LARRY JONAS. He announced that his family has a new addition –his second granddaughter. He also recently returned from a trip to Hawaii where he took advantage of his time share. He followed up with an odd story that MICHAEL CARUANA proposed to him but he turned him down. Watching LARRY drive up on his moped, he may want to reconsider.

Just like LARRY, he tried to drag another Rotarian into his fine by calling PAST PRESIDENT MICHAEL BADDELEY to stand up. He stated that his new granddaughter was named Jordan because of MICHAEL’S daughter, Jordan. Out of respect MICHAEL gave $25 and LARRY finally sat down after agreeing to $50.

PAST PRESIDENT LOU STEINBERG surprised us all by giving enough money to get his wife, Julie, a Paul Harris. It was to thank her for all the loving hard work she has done to help him.

RICK MOSSI won the raffle and pulled a blue rock which made him a wine bottle richer.

Our speaker was Susan Starbird who spoke about the local group, Petaluma WaterWays. She went into details on their planned vision and future of our Petaluma River.

Whereupon, our President wished everybody a wonderful day and adjourned the meeting.

On a side note, while your editor was writing diligently at the meeting, his lunch neighbor LEE REPOSA pointed out that his lunch neighbor PAST PRESIDENT KIP HERZOG seemed to have a bit of a mix up. It turned out that he was in possession of PAST PRESIDENT BABE AMARAL’s Chicken Badge. Due to our belief that KIP could never have done this on accident, we concluded that he has always had a childhood dream of being like BABE and this was his opportunity.

It was a pleasant surprise to see PAST PRESIDIENT JIM McCAFFREY ring the bell at start the meeting. He announced that PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN had asked him to take over the Presidential duties for the day and he stepped right into his old role.

BARNEY FAUSS sang “God Bless America” and PAUL LOUNIBOS gave us some words of wisdom from the great George Carlin. It is a skewed version of “America, the Beautiful” that is both funny and poignant:

Oh Beautiful for smoggy skies, insecticided grain,
For strip-mined mountain's majesty above the asphalt plain.
America, America, man sheds his waste on thee,
And hides the pines with billboard signs, from sea to oily sea.

PRESIDENT ELECT JOANNE FERRIS and STEVE HENRIS each brought a guest and there was no Sunshine Report this week – everyone is healthy!

ACTING PRESIDENT JIM McCAFFREY reminded us that Friendship Feast donations are being accepted for those members who did not attend, but want to support the Dictionary Program.

The upcoming SCARC meeting (Thursday evening, May 26) is being hosted by our club – tickets are $20 for members. Please see Steve Olmstead for details/tickets — or click here.

ACTING PRESIDENT JIM McCAFFREY gave us a little Club history lesson, which was fascinating. The 29 original members of the Rotary Club of Petaluma came from a diverse collection of industries, including retail, agriculture and publishing. Petaluma had a strong business community and its citizens enjoyed a very good quality of life. The longest tenured members of our club – HERB BUNDESEN, CHUCK BRANDNER and DICK WEBER – all joined the Club in 1958. During ACTING PRESIDENT JIM McCAFFREY’s year as President, the total budget for the Club was $6500 and they built new benches for the bus route in town and worked on Durst Field at Petaluma High School.

Lee Reposa in action.

The fine can made its weekly appearance, but with a historical twist - $5 for all who were members in 1979, $10 for all the bankers (no matter what year they joined!) and $25 for all female members. Being the gentleman that he is, ACTING PRESIDENT JIM McCAFFREY waved the fine for the ladies.

STEVE OLMSTED kindly donated $50 for his new grand-daughter.

DAVE BARBIERI walked away with a bottle of wine from the Raffle.

PAST PRESIDENT TAWNY TESCONI introduced our speaker, Cordell Stillman, from the Sonoma County Water Authority. He gave a very interesting presentation on Community Choice Aggregation, which is a system adopted into law by California (and other states) which allows cities and counties to aggregate the buying power of individual customers within a defined jurisdiction in order to secure alternative energy supply contracts. It is an interesting concept that is being considered for Sonoma County. Thank you, Cordell, for a thought provoking program.

Thank you to PAST PRESIDENT JIM McCAFFREY for a great meeting. It must have been a lot of fun to have been a part of your presidency in 1979!
