Our master of ceremonies, STEVE GAVRILOFF, opened our debunking meeting to a full house at the Rooster Run Banquet Hall, . .

. . . and immediately had JIM McCAFFREY deliver the invocation. We then observed a moment of silence for the passing of DUKE IVERSON and VINCE DEL’OSSO, true gentleman and Rotarians to the end. They will be missed.

LOU STEINBERG then led us in song, including a rousing rendition of Gypo from Pelican Bay in honor of our favorite “rambler, gambler”, GENE BENEDETTI.

MC Steve then acknowledged our distinguished guests, including Past-District Governors Bruce Campbell, Mike Merrill, and Norm Owen, and their respective spouses, one of whom (Maureen Merrill) is our DG-Elect.

ONITA PELLIGRINI and PDG Norm Owen then inducted MARLEEN FREETLY into our Club, an especially sentimental induction given how closely connected Marleen has always been to the Club through her late spouse, HARVEY FREETLY (the founder of our Club’s world renowned dictionary program). Congratulations Marleen, we’re glad you joined!

TAWNY TESCONI then provided the debunking entertainment with an old fashioned... slide show roast (via power point) depicting the life of our illustrious outgoing Prez, complete with a whole brass pole full of saucy barbs and quips as only Tawny can deliver – great show, great laughs, great job!

MICHAEL NISTLER then closed out the roast with a few techno tales and twists on the Prez’ year.

Once all the laughter finally subsided, the Prez introduced his family in attendance, including his children (Dan and Sarah), his brother (Larry), and his very supportive (and much appreciated) wife, Patty. The Prez then personally thanked and presented a gift to each of his board members, including JOHN DADO (Treasurer), ONITA PELLEGRINI (Past-President), JOANNE FERRRIS (President-Elect), JUDI ALLEWELT, JAMES BURLESON, MICHAEL CARUANA, LORETTA CATAROZOLI, BILL GROVERMAN, MICHAEL NESTLER, STEVE POWELL and JOE TAMBE. He went on to thank his set-up committee, including FRED WULFF, MICHAEL NESTLER, TOM BRANDAL, ANDY KVALHEIM, MIKE STAUBER, and PDG ED FULLERTON, for the great job they did all year long, and he gave special kudos to Kathy Brandal for all the debunking preparations and decorations she did.

The Prez then called up President-Elect JOANNE FERRIS for the ceremonial exchange of pins, and officially introduced Joanne as our 2011-2012 Club President…but not before he astutely noted that while our Club has had several father-son presidential tandems (RED and DAN LIBARLE, JOHN and PAUL LOUNIBOS, and MAX and KIP HERZOG), Joanne and her late father, TED BORR (our Club President 35 years ago), are our first father- daughter duo! (Note to Joanne: beware the ghosts of great Rotary feminists past…especially those apparitions who look anything like PDG ART AGNEW!) After Clark and Joanne thanked webmaster AL CATTALINI for all of his fine work, Clark then handed the gavel over to Joanne amidst a standing ovation for both of them!

Prez Joanne congratulated Clark on his great year and for all of his administration’s accomplishments, especially the huge increase in RI fundraising they did. She then introduced her husband (Mike) and her mother (Jane) and thanked them both for their unconditional support. Then, as is her custom, the Prez got right down to business with the introduction of her 2011-2012 Board, including PAUL LOUNIBOS (Past-President), LORETTA CATAROZOLI (President-Elect), GAIL CARDOROPOLI (Secretary), MARLEEN FREETLY (Treasurer), JOHN DADO (Business Manager), DAVID SOLO (RI Foundation Coordinator), ONITA PELLIGIRINI (Membership Leader), CLARK ROSEN (Ethics), JIM BECKER, AL CATTALINI, BRIAN BREEN, RICK GORMAN, LEE REPOZA, and your dear editor, MIKE BADDELEY.

WHEREUPON, Prez Joanne then pinned Pres-Elect LORETTA “Muy Casts” CATAROZOLI (who couldn’t have pinned it herself even if she wanted to!), thanked Clark again for a great year, and duly adjourned the meeting!

Your Rota-Teller team, Mike and Al, wish you a Happy Fourth!

See you all on July 7 at Joanne’s first official regular luncheon meeting. In the meantime, please enjoy a safe and sane Happy 4th of July weekend!

Herb Bundesen, 1924–2011

Member since 1958

We are saddened to report that Herb Bundesen passed away on June 11. Herb exemplified the Four-Way Test through a lifetime of service. We'll miss his smile, his voice, and his friendship. You can read the various obituaries pubished about Herb in our In Memoriam section.

PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN was smiling more broadly than usual as he opened the meeting. Was this because it was his last luncheon meeting? Or was it because Tony slipped him a plate of his favorite, onion rings?

After BARNEY FAUSS led a special God Bless America in tribute to HERB BUNDESEN, PRESIDENT CLARK called for a moment of silence as we remembered Herb. Then he read a poignant letter from Assistant District Governor Greg Freitas describing how Herb welcomed him to Rotary many years ago and continued smiling greetings over the years. It was our Thought for the Day and one not soon forgotten.

JUDI ALLEWELT announced the visiting Rotarians.

One of them, from Sonoma Valley, presented PRESIDENT CLARK a citation recognizing our support of Kid Scoop News.

Sunshine Report. We're sorry to report that LORETTA CATAROZOLI isn't writing this Rota-Teller as scheduled. We're even sorrier to report that Loretta is recovering from two fractured wrists received when she was thrown from a golf cart Friday afternoon. (No, Stan didn't do it!) She's home now, but is facing surgery to repair one of the wrists.

More Sunshine Report. JIM BECKER announced that DICK WEBER has improved a bit.

Still More Sunshine Report. AL KAPLAN reported a recent outing with TED ADKINS who has good days and bad days, but mostly good days.

We celebrated June birthdays today. Sittting at the Birthday Table were LARRY JONAS, DAVID BARBIERI, JOE TAMBE, FRED FROST, and SHERRY BURWEN.

SHERRY BURWEN volunteered to be fined for the purchase of her new Chevrolet, an automobile with sexual identity issues and well-secured infant seats in the rear.

TOM BRANDAL rose and said something which we totally forgot. Sorry, Tom!

LOU STEINBERG announced that he would be at RYLA all next week — and that there were still openings for Rotarians to help prepare and serve the tri-tip dinner.

LARRY JONAS reported that all was progressing nicely for the July 24 Petaluma Art & Equestrian Festival.

BANO CUMMINGS gladly paid a $100 fine as she described the unusual “elephant house” her son had designed and built in Latin America. No, it’s not for elephants. It’s for people.

LEN MYGATT described how, with his wife out of town, he is surviving the experience of cooking for himself. No sympathy here, he got fined.

JEANNETTE CLARK was also fined. We suspect it was for a trip but your editor’s senility is showing here.

PRESIDENT CLARK happily accepted a certificate of appreciation for the Boy Scouts of America for our continuing sponsorship of BSA Troop 8.

TOM BAKER won a bottle of wine in the raffle.

LOU STEINBERG introduced our speaker, Dr. Ruben Armiñana, President of Sonoma State University. Dr. Armiñana gave an interesting description of the past and future of this gem of a university, located in our own backyard.

See you at the Debunking!

COMING EVENTS

June 16 - Dr. Ruben Armiñana - SSU President
June 23 - Dark
June 24 - Debunking - Rooster Run Event Center, 5:30pm
June 30 - Dark

Clark's grandson Renn opens the meeting.

On this Thursday preceding Flag Day, President CLARK ROSEN led our group in the pledge to our flag. BARNEY FAUSS followed with God Bless America.

TAWNY TESCONI offered thoughts for the day from Albert Einstein and Linus Pauling. Rotarians with guests included: JANE SALDAÑA-TALLEY; JUDI ALLEWELT (grandson); KIP HERZOG (former member RALPH SARTORI); JIM BECKER; GAIL CARDAROPOLI (grandchildren); President CLARK introduced his son and grandson from New York.

The Sunshine Report was cloudy with the news that long-time members DICK WEBER and HERB BUNDESEN are very ill. Remember them and their families in your thoughts.

ONITA PELLEGRINI reported that ticket sales for President CLARK’S debunking are going fast. Please RSVP ASAP.

MICHAEL CARUANA reported that preparations for PAEF are well ahead of last year. Posters and postcards are available now.

Recognitions occupied the remainder of President CLARK’s agenda:

ED FULLERTON: Nevada and California part-time resident, $50;

GARY BRODIE: lost badge, found by President CLARK, only $5;

Babe claims his badge is missing.

LEE BEAN: feeling like a 30-year old, Hawaiian trip and tan, $50;

RICK SUSICK: daughter’s graduation from Dominican, $100;

DAN FISH: chicken badge, $10;

RICK GORMAN: wife’s name in paper all the time, $50;

BARNEY FAUSS, granddaughter accepted at Emerson, $30;

DAVID BARBIERI: his three grandchildren were gone for one week, $20;

. . . and ONITA PELLEGRINI offered $50 for “changes taking place” at the Chamber of Commerce.

Raffle winner RICK GORMAN received a “nice bottle of wine”.

Program chair JIM BECKER introduced our guest speaker, Henry Froneberger, who related an amazing story about his late mother-in-law and her book that made the N. Y. Times best-seller lists. The catchy title: “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”. JOANNE FERRIS recommends this book very highly.

Today’s meeting got off to an early start with a tasting of select Landmark Vineyards wines provided by Bob Cooley of Landmark Vineyards. The wines received a solid “thumbs up” from our members, many of whom seemed unusually loquacious.

Sipping the Overlook Chardonnay, STEVE OLMSTED commented, “The wine exhibits a golden honey hue with pure Granny Smith apple aromas along with distinctive notes of lime blossom and nutmeg. The mouth feel is rich and round and unfolds to reveal shortbread and pineapple flavors that linger.”

FRED WULFF had this to say about the Grand Detour Pinot Noir: “Beautiful aromas of smoky herbs, black cherries, forest floor, and plums... with good structure, round, generous flavors, and medium to full body, this stylish Pinot Noir combines elegance with flavor authority."

A loud stroke of the bell silenced the conversations and PRESIDENT CLARK called the meeting to order, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and called on LOU STEINBERG to lead us in song.

PRESIDENT CLARK delivered the Thought for the Day, a quote from George Washington Carver: How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.

BRIAN BREEN introduced two visiting Rotarians, FRED FROST introduced his wife, Linda, and NANCY COOLEY introduced her husband, Bob, and another guest, familiar to many of us, . . .

. . . Jim Mickelson, our Club President in 2001-2002.

Sunshine Report: JIM BECKER announced that DICK WEBER, suffering from COPD, followed ten days of hospitalization with a stint at Petaluma Rehab. He’s headed back home but you should call there before visiting.

June anniversaries are being celebrated by WHIT HALL, STEVE GAVRILOFF, STEVE POWELL, WALLY BRAGDON, JOHN DADO, PAUL LOUNIBOS, LOU STEINBERG, and HERB BUNDESEN and their spouses. HERB and Barbara BUNDESEN take the grand prize, having been married in 1948.

PRESIDENT CLARK read a letter from the Good Neighbors Association thanking the Club for planting the Dave Amundsen Memorial Grove and thereby significantly improving the Fair Street corridor.

That's Bano Cummings massaging Lou's shoulders.

LOU STEINBERG announced that Camp RYLA 2010 commences Sunday, June 19. With 69 students already paid up, the session is essentially sold out.

LEE REPOSA, coordinating our Club’s traditional tri-tip BBQ at Camp RYLA, is looking for members to help with the cooking on serving on Wednesday, June 22. Call Lee if you can help. It’s a great opportunity to wear one of our new logo aprons and meet a lot of great kids.

PRESIDENT CLARK proudly noted the recognition we received for our sponsorship of Kid Scoop News for three classrooms.

MICHAEL CARUANA announced that planning for the Petaluma Art and Equestrian Festival is going well and that postcards are now available for distribution. Posters and road signs will be available soon.

Holding a poster in each hand PRESIDENT CLARK announced the Orquesta Infantíl Juveníl Lomas del Paraíso which features a concert and reception at the Green Music Center on Saturday, June 11 and, on Sunday June12, a barbecue and encore performance at Petaluma’s Keller Estates winery. Discount tickets ($100 each) are available to Rotarians.

PRESIDENT CLARK announced that the time period for Club matching of individual Paul Harris contributions has expired but that DAVID SOLO is still gratefully accepting donations to Rotary International.

Did you forget your cheese? That’s the question KIP HERZOG is asking. If you won a cheese basket at Farmers and Merchants Night but failed to pick it up, contact Kip right away. Otherwise, it’ll be a raffle prize at an upcoming Rotary meeting. (NANCY COOLEY wasn’t sure if it was hers, observing that she didn’t remember anything from Farmers Night.)

ROY MUSICK, blaming a lack of warm weather suitable for varnishing, acknowledged he is a bit late in restoring the “Rotary Club of Petaluma meets here Thursdays” plaque that was found hiding at Petaluma Golf and Country Club. He agreed to pay an $80 fine for his tardiness.

DAVID SOLO acknowledged a so-so fishing trip to the Upper Sacramento River in late April. This recreation cost him a $50 fine.

Another fisherman was RICK VAN BEBBER. His fishing trip plus a visit to Reno ended up costing him $100.

Speaking of fish, DANNY FISH held the winning ticket, pulled the wrong rock out of the bag, and walked off with a bottle of wine.

NANCY COOLEY introduced her husband, Bob Cooley, Vice President of Landmark Vineyards in Kenwood. Bob gave an interesting and much appreciated presentation on wine marketing.

As the meeting ended we said goodbye to our Youth Exchange student, Mint, who after a bit more touring will be returning to her home in Bangkok.
